The Best Definition of Christianity
From Fr. Christopher
G
iving is therapy for the soul. It keeps the heart open to others and sensitive to their
needs. Giving is also the secret of a mentally and emotionally healthy life. Dr.
Adler, a famous psychiatrist, said, “I suppose all the ills of the human personality
can be traced back to one thing, namely, not understanding the meaning of the statement (of
Jesus): ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
A famous theologian said once, “People are sick not only because they have not received
love, but also because they are not able to give love.” Dr. Karl Menninger said to a person
who had suffered a breakdown, “Go find the neediest person and help him.” For our mental
and physical health we need to give. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
A child becomes an adult when he stops taking and starts giving. In fact, one of the best
signs of maturity is the ability to give.

During a stewardship campaign a parishioner complained that Christianity is one continual
give, give, give. The pastor replied, “Thank you for the finest definition of Christianity I
have ever heard.”
Christianity is one continual give…. That’s the way it all began. God gave (John 3:16). He
gave His only Son. His Son gave. He gave His life on the Cross that we may have life. His
disciples gave. They left their homes and businesses to devote themselves full time to Christ
as spreaders of His Good News. Most of the twelve apostles died a martyr’s death. They
gave their lives for Christ.
Through the ages the work of Christ has prospered to the extent that Christians have been
willing to give, give, give.

Thank You to EVERYONE who volunteered, served, cooked and donated to our annual
Greek Festival on September 14 & 15.
We continuously heard the same thing all weekend from the many patrons and visitors: how
organized our festival was - happy our parishioners were – everyone was smiling and so
welcoming, and the food was delicious!
A special thank you to our Chairpersons: CHRIS AND
JEANETTE ALEXANDROU. They both did an amazing job
and we are truly grateful for their dedication and commitment
to our festival this year!
We are also so very grateful to our Festival Committee Leaders and Coordinators: Brian
and Andrea Lynch, Jim and Nancy Patsios, Bob Goodwin, Paul Gianes, Terry and Valerie
Murphy, Peter Souhleris, Angie Chingris, Martha Coravos, Vasso Saragas, Ed George, Bob
Trant, Nick Miminos, Pam Smith, Alysia Redard, Dylan Archambault, Jim Panagos, and
Chris Primes.
Thank you to all our Sponsors, Donors and Placemat Contributors!
And extra special thanks to ALL who worked endless hours in the kitchen and at the various
work stations. There were so many people who gave their time to bake, clean, prep and serve.
We are successful because of ALL of you – THANK YOU!

next article after the event.
We are entering autumn when New England puts on her prettiest
clothes and we can enjoy the brisk days and early evenings
allowing more time for reading and contemplation. Our new
additions to the Bookstore, hopefully, will inspire you to do so:
Many thanks to those who donated to the Lunchless Luncheon
to benefit Hellenic College/Holy Cross School. I will report the
final tally next month.
“Speaking to God”; A Prayer Manual by Archbishop Demetrios
of America. “The Case for Christ”; A Journalist’s Personal
Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus. “First Among Equals”;
A Very Informative Booklet Detailing the
Foundation of the Orthodox Church before and after the Great

Operation Housewarming is in full swing. Please consider
donating a new household item to help a veteran set up his/her
own home. The list of items to donate is on the collection
container in the atrium. Please see me or any member of
Philoptochos if you have any questions.
The next meeting will be October 17th at 7:00. All ladies of the

Do come in and browse. You will find something of interest for
everyone. We would love to hear your suggestions and
comments.

Sunday School Updates
We are off to a great start to our Sunday school year! We had a
wonderful show of students both returning and new on
September 15th. If you have not registered your child(ren) yet
for Sunday school, please remember to fill out the form and send
it to the church office, or slide it under the office door if it’s
locked. Forms can be found on the Sunday school bulletin board
downstairs or you can get it from the September “The Word”
newsletter online at our church site. This year we plan to have a
monthly spotlight on a bible story and character from the Old
Testament. We pray that parents will also read these stories out
of the bible each month with their children to share our faith and
biblical history.
We have planned a fun-filled year of outings and church
meetings for the JOY children ages 7–9 and The Middlers,
children ages 10–12 (5th and 6th graders) this year. Our first JOY
and Middlers meeting successfully took place on Sunday,
September 29th following Sunday school.
Our next church meeting will be held on Sunday, November
10th. All meetings at the church will be held immediately after
Sunday school from 12:00 – 1:15 pm in the large lower-level
room of the church.
Our first fellowship outing for the year will be held at Crescent
Farms in Haverhill, MA on Saturday, October 12th at 3:00
pm. Please join us for our annual hayride to the pumpkin patch
to pick our own pumpkins. After the perfect pumpkin has been
picked we will navigate through the giant corn maze and end our
day with delicious Richardson’s ice cream. Parents and siblings
are welcome to attend this outing.
Sunday School Calendar Ahead:
December 1 – No School (Thanksgiving weekend)
October Bible Spotlight: King David
October’s Old Testament focus is on King David. One of the
most famous stories of the Old Testament is of David and
Goliath. This story shows how David loved and put all his faith
in God to overcome a giant. Psalm 147:11 says “The Lord
delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His
unfailing love.” Some questions for you to find answers to are:
1)
How many stones did David have and how many did he
use to defeat Goliath?
2)
Was David a man or a young boy when he defeated
Goliath?
3)
What work did David do for his family and how did
that prepare him to face a giant?
4)
Why was David able to defeat Goliath and who did he
give the glory for his victory to?
Draw a picture and we will hang it on the Sunday school bulletin
board!
The cost for this event is:
·
$10.00 per child – this includes the hayride, a
pumpkin, the corn maze, and ice cream
·
$5.00 per adult – adult price only includes the giant
corn maze and hayride to the pumpkin patch
If your child would like to attend, please RSVP to
pattytrant@earthlink.net by Friday, October 4th.
I look forward to seeing everyone at Crescent Farms!
In Christ,
Patty Trant
