News “Hope and A Helping” October 2011 n o i t i d Fall E The temperature is cooling down, kids are back in school and life is settling into a more normal, familiar routine - it must be Fall! Thoughts begin to drift toward pumpkins, costumes, changing colors, sweaters, baseball playoffs and local football games. The BBQ will soon be covered and the house will be filled with wonderful smells from the kitchen oven. There may even be a log burning in the fireplace, although the log may be fake and the fire provided by your local Gas Co., the feelings are the same. Summer is officially over! Unfortunately, the traditional passage of the season is not a time of joy for many of our neighbors. Many continue to look for a job in a market that provides very few opportunities and, because of the length of time on unemployment, their benefits may have run out or will very soon. Many of those who are working have had their hours cut back or their pay reduced and the rising cost of living has exacerbated their problem even more. We need to be mindful of our neighbors all year long but especially as we enter the Holiday Season. At the Pantry we are doing all we can to provide assistance with food, clothing and emotional support. We are also helping by providing reading tutor programs for their children. Each of us can make a difference in someone else’s life this Holiday Season by reaching out with a helping hand. We had a wonderful Fall Celebration/Fund Raiser event on September 24, 2011 at the Glendora Country Club. The evening was filled with silent auctions, raffle drawings, live auctions and a great dinner. We also had a table filled with homemade desserts that were auctioned off after dinner and the winners shared their prize with other guests at their table. Two guests won live auction BBQ dinners with Glendora Mayor Doug Tessitor and his wife Cyndy at their home. They will have an interesting evening no doubt. Other live auction items included weekend cabin/condo getaways to Big Bear Lake, La Quinta, Palm Desert & Green Valley Lake. We sincerely thank all of the donors who provided the silent & live auction items and all of the guests who made the evening such a memorable success. We also want to thank all the individuals who provided the dessert auction baked goods that were so delicious. A special thank you goes out to Dotti Crawford and her daughter Lauren for wrapping all of the silent auction items; Patti Moehler for arranging the silent auction area; and Sara Baron for jumping in and helping with the finishing touches that made everything look so special. Arrow Highway, Glendora, CA 91740 News Page 2 Volunteer’s in the Spotlight We think it is a tribute to any organization when a husband and wife volunteer as a team. Although Shepherd’s Pantry has more than one husband & wife volunteer team, Tom and Irma Neprasch certainly stand out as a great example of what volunteerism is all about. Tom is one of our resource counselors and Irma helps clients shop in our clothing store. They have both volunteered at the Pantry for more than four years and in spite of long work commutes and busy daily schedules they always make time to volunteer on Wednesday evenings. They both have a great attitude and a compassionate heart and enjoy helping those who are less fortunate. Local Community Sponsors We are proud to add the following organizations to our growing list of local community sponsors: Tree Top Corporation Grace Lutheran Church - La Verne Barnes & Noble Citrus Valley Association of Realtors GCCC - Holiday Basket Program Shepherd’s Pantry will, again this year, handle the distribution of Glendora Community Coordinating Council’s (GCCC) Holiday Baskets to Glendora Tom’s lay counseling experience serves him well as residents on Friday, November 11, 2011 fro 2:00 he meets with clients one-on-one and listens to their pm to 7:00 pm. Irma has a wonderful compassionate heart and really goes out of her way to help clients find just the right clothing items for their families. She can also speak some Spanish which is a big help on those nights when we are really busy. She was instrumental in the start-up of the clothing store in the summer of 2008 and continues to volunteer on Wednesday evenings. Food Drives ADP Tax & Financial Services in San Dimas will again this year conduct a company wide food drive program for Shepherd’s Pantry. Last year they donated more the 7,700 lbs of food so we are anxious to see how much food will be collected this year. We are fortunate to have Tom & Irma as a husband The program is managed by Joe Gutierrez who, in and wife volunteer team and hope they will continue spite of a very busy work schedule, makes time to to be a part of our program for a long time to come. coordinate all of the food collection activities. They plan to deliver the food in two increments, November 7th & 14th. Citrus Valley Association of Realtors in Glendora will conduct a one day food drive on October 21, 2011 and donate a large portion of the food to Shepherd’s Pantry. It is this kind of effort from local organizations that helps to make it possible for us to support all the families who rely on us for food assistance. Page 3 Children’s Summer Reading Tutor Camp New Volunteers We are very fortunate to have such a diverse group of volunteers and here are the names of some of our newest members: Loni Spelman - Resource Counselor Tom Beal - Resource Counselor Sonja Belton - Resource Counselor Susan Lopez - Client Intake Ken Daudt - Clothing Check-in Lanette Baumann - Resource Counselor Clothing Store In 2008 Gloria Miller volunteered to manage the start-up and on-going operations of our clothing store. She has done a wonderful job over the past three years creating what we believe is one of the finest non-profit clothing stores around. She dedicated a considerable amount of her personal time to insuring the store was always the best it could be and after three plus years has decided to retire from actively managing the store. Much as we hate to see her step down, we completely understand her motivation and wish her and her husband Gary well and hope they are able to enjoy traveling and more time at home. As the old saying goes, no one is irreplaceable but we discovered it will take a team effort to continue with the same level of quality and efficiency we’ve come to enjoy. Effective immediately, the following volunteers will assume clothing store lead responsibilities: Ellen Anderson—Thursday evenings Darlene Nichols - Wednesday evenings Jane Van Stedum - Mon./Tues. mornings Please join me in saying a heartfelt thank you to Gloria and the volunteers who have agreed to assume new responsibilities.
