Connecticut’s Kia Nurse, center, is fouled by South Carolina’s
Alaina Coates, left, as A'ja Wilson, right, defends during the first
half of an NCAA college basketball game, Monday, in Storrs,
Conn.
No. 2 UConn routs
No. 1 South Carolina
STORRS, Conn. (AP) UConn left no doubt who
the best team in the country
is.
Kaleena
MosquedaLewis scored 23 points and
Breanna Stewart added 22
to help No. 2 UConn beat
top-ranked South Carolina
87-62 on Monday night.
"I think it speaks for
itself," Stewart said.
Still, there is a lot of basketball left to be played
before the Final Four in
Tampa this year. And,
coach Geno Auriemma
knows that he could see the
Gamecocks again.
"I think this was one
night, one game in
February," Auriemma said.
"They are going to be playing deep into the NCAA
tournament. I told Dawn
(Staley), I hope we play
them in Tampa. That would
be pretty special."
This was the 54th meeting between the top two
teams in the nation, and the
20th time that the Huskies
have been involved in that
matchup. They improved to
17-3 in those games.
Moriah Jefferson had 16
points for the Huskies (231), who improved to 17-3
in matchups between the
top two teams in the poll.
The teams traded baskets
early and South Carolina
(22-1) led 18-15 7½ min-
utes in before UConn took
over. The Huskies scored
the next 13 points to blow
the game open. Jefferson
got it started with a threepoint play. Morgan Tuck
and
Mosqueda-Lewis
added 3-pointers as UConn
led 28-18.
Bianca Cuevas hit a
floater with 8:48 left to end
the drought for South
Carolina, but it was shortlived. The Huskies scored
the next eight to take command.
"We played unbelievably
well, played great on
defense," Auriemma said.
The Huskies led by 16 at
the half and South Carolina
could only get within 10
the rest of the way.
Aleighsa Welch and
Tiffany Mitchell each
scored 17 to lead the
Gamecocks.
"We're not stunned. This
is no way, shape or form
the defining point in our
season," Welch said. "We
have to evaluate the film,
ourselves. Learn from it
and move on."
This game had been
highly anticipated since it
was the 54th meeting of
The Associated Press
women's basketball poll's
top teams.
Not even a blizzard that
dropped around a foot of
snow in the area could keep
fans away. Students arrived
more than two hours before
the game started to get in
their seats where T-shirts
awaited with the phrase
"Basketball Capital of the
World" adorning the front.
Even the 600 fans who
couldn't make it turned in
their tickets so that students
on campus could attend to
make this game a sellout.
This was the first on-campus sellout for UConn
since last season's senior
day.
"I can't say enough about
all the fans that braved the
elements to come out here.
That's pretty special,"
Auriemma said.
It's not often that UConn
has hosted a No. 1 team in
the nation. Usually, it's the
Huskies who are the top
team in the country. South
Carolina has been No. 1 in
the poll the last 12 weeks
since UConn suffered its
only loss of the season at
Stanford.
Assuming the Huskies
can beat Tulane on
Saturday, they will reclaim
the No. 1 position in the
poll. That's not too much of
a stretch to believe since
UConn has won its conference games this season by
nearly 50 points a game.
With about a minute left,
the student section started
chanting, "We're No. 1."
Cook helps No. 4 Duke hold
off Florida State’s upset bid
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
(AP) - Mike Krzyzewski
has seen how this grueling
stretch has affected his
Duke team: three wins in
six days.
And he has also seen the
Blue Devils go from struggling in Atlantic Coast
Conference play after
back-to-back losses to
North Carolina State and
Miami in mid-January to
winning eight of their last
nine.
"My team has been
through
the
ringer,"
Krzyzewski said after No.
4 Duke held off Florida
State 73-70 on Monday
night. "They've come out
pretty well. Winning all but
one of those. We have to
get a little bit refreshed
right now."
Duke deserves the break.
Especially after a close call
against Florida State.
Quinn Cook scored a
season-high 26 points and
Jahlil Okafor was 5 of 5
from the floor in the second
half and finished with 13
points against Florida
State. Tyus Jones added 16
points, 12 assists and six
rebounds for Duke (21-3,
8-3
Atlantic
Coast
Conference), which won its
fourth straight.
But this one came with
some last-minute drama.
Florida State pulled
within one at 70-69 as
Xavier
Rathan-Mayes
drove the lane for a layup
after dribbling under the
basket with 11 seconds to
go. But the Seminoles
couldn't close the gap any
further in the final seconds.
Devon Bookert scored a
career-high 23 points for
FSU (13-12, 5-7 ACC).
Bookert shot 6 of 8, but
was fouled twice in the
closing seconds before he
was able to get a shot off.
Bookert made just 1 of 4
free throws in the final seconds, including a last
attempt that he intentionally missed but Cook
rebounded.
"Like most great teams,
they found a way to
counter every surge that
we made," Florida State
coach Leonard Hamilton
said.
While the Seminoles
kept Okafor in check in the
first half, holding him to
just two points on a pair of
free throws in eight minutes, he broke out in the
second half.
He had eight points in
less than three minutes
early in the second half, the
last one an emphatic dunk
to put Duke ahead 40-29
with 17:14 left in the game.
Okafor has scored in
double figures in 24
straight games, breaking
Johnny Dawkins' record
for the longest scoring
streak by a Blue Devils
freshman.
Duke shot 23 of 51 (45.1
percent) from the floor,
bouncing back after opening 0 for 8 from the floor.
"We didn't start out
well," Krzyzewski said.
"Our guys are a little bit
burned out. Thank goodness that they responded."
Montay Brandon added
12 points for FSU, all in the
second half. The Seminoles
shot 24 of 53 (45.3 percent)
from the floor.
Michael Ojo had a
career-high nine rebounds
and three blocks for the
Seminoles.
